OMG! There's going to be a Vista SP1!!

Did you hear the news? Long Zheng has undeniable proof that Microsoft is planning an SP1 for Vista!

Breathe in. Breathe out. Breathe in, Brea-- Wait a minute! Was there ever any doubt that Microsoft was going to release Service Pack 1 for Windows Vista? I mean, since when has Microsoft not shipped a service pack for it's operating system? Especially after the catastrophe that was RTM?

If Microsoft wants to sit there and pretend it doesn't exist until the day it comes out - so what? The community knows it's there, and that's what matters. Whether or not Microsoft NDAs that particular bit of information is neither here nor there.

It's been confirmed time and time again that Windows Vista SP1 will be shipping, and sometime this year. Microsoft has stated they're "working on it" but without giving a explicit deadline in public. So what's the big deal?, you ask.

That's easy. Longhorn is over. The "OMG, build 5xxx is confirmed" days are over. The days of "Leaked (possible) Vista boot screen!" ((All of which, by the way, turned out to be false seeing as Vista RTM doesn't even really have a boot screen at all)) being the first 5 items on Digg are also over. So now, in an attempt to re-invigorate the (non-existent) hype about Windows Vista, certain bloggers are attempting to make news were there is none - no offense, Long.

This isn't about a single article posting much ado about nothing, it's about a frame of mind. It's probably safe to say that no single piece of software was ever hyped as much as Longhorn, not even the the mini-Mac running on the iPhone or the upcoming Leopard version of OS X. So now that the hype is over, not everyone is willing to accept that it's time to move on.

Longhorn is dead. Vista was a disappointment.. So what? Nothing to see here, move along now... Because that's the truth, all of Longhorn was much ado about something that turned out to be nothing; and now most of the blogging community has learned to take promises of advanced, ultra-innovative technology in an upcoming Microsoft OS with a grain of salt - but that doesn't mean that anyone (even for a second) thought that Microsoft wouldn't release SP1 for Vista... Not ever.

Indeed. In fact, it is said that every time Microsoft intentionally cripples an application, God kills a panda. That's why there are very few pandas left. Very few.

Did we ever doubt that such an occurrence was inevitable?  Vista SP1 and the Panda theory?

They may even serve us a double whammy and introduce XP SP3 which might, only might, include a fix for XP's nasty habit of eating its successor's restore points in a dual boot scenario...but no, I hope for too much.

    Poor Pandas.

Good point, Spencer... I thought it was koalas, but I guess I was wrong.

So long as the fire foxs don't die, it's cool:

Peter, there's a fix for that Restore Point issue here.
