1.
On a desktop PC. I disconnected my WinXP OS drive. I installed Win 7 on a separate single drive (C. I reconnected the XP drive (now D, booted into Win 7 and installed Easy BCD ver1.7.2 (not beta). Could not get it to work no matter how much I read the forums.

Deleted EasyBCD ver 1.7.2. Downloaded and installed EasyBCD (beta ver 2.0 build 76). Removed XP entry. Added XP entry, used all program defaults. Works GREAT... wha-lah. Thanks.

2.
On a laptop, a long, long time ago. I partioned the drive for and installed XP for dual-boot. Vista was the OEM installed OS. I booted into Vista and installed EasyBCD v 1.7.1 Could never get it to work correctly, missing file errors, etc. Read the forums, gave up months ago. Just left it alone and used Vista.

Today after success with the desktop, on the laptop, deleted EasyBCD ver 1.7.2. Downloaded and installed EasyBCD (beta ver 2.0 build 76). Removed XP entry. Added XP entry, used all program defaults. Works GREAT... wha-lah. Thanks.

This latest ver, Beta 2.0 build 76, seems to know what it's doing, at least for me.

Thanks to: Terry60 who wrote the following,

"Download EasyBCD 2.0 latest build (don't use 1.7)
Install it in W7
add/remove
delete the XP entry
add it again
accept the offer to auto-configure
don't change the drive assigned to XP - EasyBCD knows what it's doing."

Hello, I was directed here by a user on another message board, and this link was recommended for correcting my stiuation... Windows Vista Recovery Disc Download The NeoSmart Files ... I am not familiar with the recovery process, and wanted to get any guidance or recommendations from anybody willing to assist. I am not completely inept with software troubleshooting, but I am far from proficient.

Originally, my goal was to uninstall Microsoft Office as it was not working. I was unable to uninstall using Vista's Programs and Features in the control panel. I found this Microsoft Support page... http://support.microsoft.com/kb/928218/en-us. I followed the instructions on this page and restarted my laptop, however I found that I still had the same problem with Microsoft Office. Now, I have the problem that my AVG won't work, and when I start the laptop it tells me that there is a problem with Pinyin IME. Other files and programs are giving me error messages now as well. I appear to have deleted files that I need. I attempted recovery using Vista System Restore wizard. Unfortunately, I deleted those files over 2 weeks ago, and the oldest system restore date listed was 3 days ago. I don't know anything about what mistakes I made as I just followed the instructions on the Microsoft Support page. I would greatly appreciate any assistance in fixing my errors. Thanks.

It's an ASUS laptop with Vista home premium pre-loaded.

I will try to give all the details, maybe it will help:

My PC has 2 drives but drive
1) The C: was partitioned into
- C: which had the preinstalled VISTA and
- a smaller D: partition for recovery.
2) I installed XP on the second drive, I think named E: now due to the partitioning.

Everything was fine to dual boot after using easy bcd.

MY MISTAKE & WHERE I LOST IT
- I installed Windows 7 Ultimate completly wiping clean the C: drive and its recovery partition. I sipped Champaign and rejoiced w/ win 7!
- I reboot to try XP and noticed that was no longer an option
- I used Easy BCD to reselect that there should be to options and reboot
- I now have the option to boot Windows 7 or XP
BUT
when I select XP I receive the following error

Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software changemight be the cause blah blah blah
File: \NTLDR
Status 0x000000f
Info: The Selected entry could not be loaded because the application is missing or corrupt.

My guess. When I celebrated and wiped my C: drive of the evil Vista OS I messed up the naming of the drives where XP used to be E: but has now become D: my guess is NTLDR and the associated boot.ini is missing because of this. Furthermore, even if I could point it to the files, the boot.ini file may also be incorrect because it would be trying to get the information from the wrong location.

AM I RIGHT and HOW DO I FIX THIS?

Help please
:x

Windows 7, dual boot, windows xp, ntldr, issue, problem, troubleshoot

Addendum:

btw,

Windows 7 Ultimate on the c: drive is a 64bit OS while my Windows XP Pro on the seperate HDD d: is 32bit.

Not sure if that changes anything. Now someone help! If I can load into Windows 7, how do I fix is so when I select XP in the boot menu I don't keep getting that

Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software changemight be the cause blah blah blah
File: \NTLDR
Status 0x000000f

P.S. it seems a lot of people have this issue as I have been searching these forums.

Hi,

Firstly I have been having trouble trying to install Vista Service Pack 2, which has got me to the point of not being able to boot into Windows at all.

I saw in another post that I should download the Paragon Rescue Kit, which I did. I then moved the Components, Default, Sam, Security, Software, System files from \Windows\System32\config\RegBack into \Windows\System32\config\. This worked brilliantly and I booted with no problems.

However, since then when I shut down and restarted the laptop went into a "configuring updates screen showing stage 3 of 3 0% where it sits for a few minutes, restarts itself and the cycle continues with no progress from the 0%.

I have tried F8 to do a startup repair, to which it says there is no error, safe mode just incurs the same issue as above and windows restore shows no restore points before I tried to install SP2.

If I try and use the CD again, replacing files etc I can get back into Vista, but I get the same issue whenever it shuts down/restarts.....

Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

I have a window 7 machine w/ one HD. I loaded Fedora 12 on empty space on drive created a / partition and /swap partition w ext3 format. I installed EasyBCD 2.0 beta 76 and tried to setup a linux boot.

1. I used legacy grub w checked box as I have installed grub to the /boot directory and not into MBR. This failed.
2. I tried Neogrub and copied my menu.lst file into it and this failed.

It seems I cannot get to the linux grub as I always get dumped to the gub4dos box.
Under neogrub if I type configfile /NST/menu.lst I can see the grub entires there. I can even type root (hd0,2) and get access to the ext3 root Fedora 12 partition. However when I execute the kernel /boot/vmlinuz.... line it fails with error 2

I changed kernel line from root=UUid... to root=/dev/sda3 and this fails as well.

I also reinstalled grub from the live cd to the partition as well and still the same. I know the correct files are in /boot and /boot/grub but the neodos can't see them.

Any ideas

I've tried everything, the "Startup repair" and various commands through the Command prompt. He told me that the possible cause of this issue was that he installed a "Windows 7 loader" somehow to preactivate his PC with W7 (even though it isn't possible and sounds ridiculous).

If you guys could enlighten me a little, I'd appreciate it so much.

Hi, I have installed a new HDD. (The old HDD is still there.)
The problem is, now I hear a weird noise coming from the computer, and it's surely the new HDD.

The sound is like humming starting each 1 second, perhaps a little more.
The sound is getting louder at the end, and then stops.
It is not loud - you could say much more than barely hearable, but it is quite annoing.

My guess is - the vibration of the HDD is causing the noise. Is it the HDD itself, the case or the cables/cords? Can I stop this noise?
(I tried holding cables/cords with no effect. - I was thinking it's a guitar-like effect.)

Important: Can it cause premature HDD failure?

Good morning everyone.
I'm hoping that someone can help me with this problem while I still have some hair left!
I have a dual boot PC with XP Prof installed first on C: and then later added Vista Ultimate which was installed on D:
Each OS becomes C: when it's booted and I'm using the Vista boot manager.
If I remove the first drive (XP) and select to boot from the Vista disk, I get a "Disk Read Error Occured press Ctrl-Alt-Del to Restart" error message. I was wasn't suprised by this and proceeded to boot from my Vista install disk. At this point, the repair process made some changes and it rebooted. After reboot, I got the same error message though Vista repair now showed the Vista partition on C: Following all the recommended help, I tried to rebuild the BCD (bootrec/rebuildBCD) but it didn't find any OS. Renaming BCD in Boot dir corrected this and bootrec then worked OK. System still shows Disk Read Error. I then went through all the recommendations of bootrec/fixmbr, bootrec/fixboot and bootsect /nt60 sys /force and none of these fixed the boot up error message.
If I replace the XP drive, Vista boot fine. I have tried the new Beta of EasyBCD as it has a feature to choose the boot drive in the Diagnostics Centre. I tried this, choosing C: as my boot drive as I was running in Vista at the time (not sure if this was right though) but I've still got the Disk Read error.
I don't really want to keep XP as I wanted to install Windows 7 on that drive but it is an enormous task to re-install my Vista as it is full of PLC programming products etc that take an age to install. I tried using the Vista built in full backup but this has backed up C: and D: (XP) and will only recover to C: and D:
Sorry for the long post. I'll keep an eye on my email and answer any questions ASAP.
Thanks for your help.
Andy

Here's the background: I had Vista installed on the primary drive. I installed Win 7 RC on a second drive and dual booted the two of them. I successfully installed Win 7 (retail upgrade product) over Vista. I now have a Win 7/Win 7 RC dual boot system.

A capture of my diskmgmt is attached below.

I would like to remove the Win 7 RC install (S:) and get rid of the dual boot. EasyBCD did not play a role in creating the dual boot, but I'm hoping it can help get rid of it. Is it as simple as deleting the Win 7 RC entry? Will this include a format of the partition currently holding Win 7 RC? (Sorry if this is covered in the documentation. It is inaccessible to me (everyone?) right now.)

Thanks in advance.

Windows Vista 64 bit Acer Aspire X3200

First let me say I am dummy level at fixing anything on the PC so need dummy replies with lots of details. Daughter's PC stopped working. Backup disk did not restore. They had made them on 19 CDs. I had no part in that but I think it was a complete backup of all her files. The Geeks at Best Buy said it was probably a hard drive failure. I don't have much confidence in what they say since they messed up one of my machines pretty bad. I decided to do some research and found that the error message could be caused from a number of things. The error message is:
AMD data change
update new data to DMI
Boot MGR is missing
Press Ctrl/alt/ del to restart.

I am able to get into the bios settings (del) but not the boot options.(F12) I have set the first boot to removeable and also to the CD/DVD. Neither option works.

I have downloaded your 64 bit recovery disk and I think I made a disk correctly using your instructions. I used a DVD rather than a CD. Not sure that was the right thing to do. I got no response from using the disk. Still the same error message. How do I tell if I am saving the downloaded file correctly so that it records a workablerecovery disk rather than just saving the downloaded onto a a disk?

I would like to try changing the hard drive just in cas,e but I cannot see a way to remove it without taking the entire PC apart. I have seen several post here that seem to have a this type of PC and wonder if someone could tell me if the hard drive can be removed without taking out the fan, CD/DVD player etc. As far as I can tell it is located under the DVD player and it looks like the DVD player has to come out to get to it. I have never removed a part from this small type cabinet so possibly I am missing something . Any help or idea from anyone one will be greatly appreciated.
I forgot to mention there are no OS disk so if I change the hard drive how would I get Vista installed on the new one with no disk?

Hello,

For the past week or two my computer, freshly installed, has been working perfectly, without any flaws. Then, starting last night at 9:30 PM, it started to apply an Office Update and then, crashed with no blue screen, I thought that this was normal until, I logged on and it rebooted again and again. I then turned automatic reboot off and got the blue screen, of course, that says the following...
A process or thread crucial to system operation has unexpectedly exited or been terminated.

If this is the first time you've seen this Stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps:

Check to make sure any new hardware or software is properly installed. If this is a new installation, ask your hardware or software manufacturer for any Windows updates you might need.

If problems continue, disable or remove any newly installed hardware or software. Disable BIOS memory options such as caching or shadowing. If you need to use Safe Mode to remove or disable components, restart your computer, press F8 to select Advanced Startup Options, and then select Safe Mode.

Also, while I am in Windows itself, it redirected me to a page saying that McAfee was the problem, but I don't even have McAfee activated, it does not run on system startup. I must open it manually, by my choice.

I am certain that I do not have a virus because the computer only has programs from the store and has no internet access, I am still working on finding the correct driver, for the card that I have not put in.

Please help in a fair amount of time.

Update: I would like to add that it is perfectly stable in Safe Mode, I can not run the programs that I need for school though.
Update: I am going to try and completely remove McAfee, since nobody seems to care about this problem
Update: McAfee was not the problem, I am going to try to cancel all of the queued updates
